![]() ![]() ![]() Writer-director Amit Masurkar and Mayank Tewari have painfully captured the bittersweet essence of the people of an obscure jungle that's far-flung from civilization. Together, they make an odd couple of sorts, but also perfectly showcase the two ends of the spectrum in our thought process, when we contemplate the state of our 'democratic' country.īut their performances would ring hollow with the lack of a meaningful screenplay. Tripathi as Aatma Singh, in particular, is the perfect opposite of Newton's naivete, in his weary scepticism. Along with him, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav put on a masterclass in acting - each one of them shines when they occupy the screen. In fact, Newton's personality traits are so well defined by Rajkummar, that it would be really interesting to see this character react to a variety of other complex and uncomfortable situations. His rigid demeanour is not tainted by the corruption and cynicism that we, as Indians, have come to embrace.Rajkummar Rao embodies this role with a blinking innocence in his eyes, hiding the intelligence of an actor who has a deep understanding of the persona he's playing. 'Newton' jumps over that divide and runs off with a brilliantly acted, impeccably written, lovingly shot, humorous, yet poignant film that Indian audiences didn't ask for, but need.Īs a character Newton Kumar is so idealistic, he's ready to literally have his face rubbed in the dirt as long as he can fulfil his duty. But in the recent past, some films have tried to blur the line between sheer 'paisa vasool' quotient and essential social commentary. After all, why would anyone want to watch a film on election woes in a remote jungle surrounded by Naxalites? Surely not your average moviegoer who is primarily accustomed to the glitz and glamour of escapistBollywood. NEWTON REVIEW: In terms of entertainment value, 'Newton' takes on a completely unremarkable subject. Despite the odds stacked against him, Newton Kumar tries his best to conduct a fair voting process in the region. The film is sickening.NEWTON STORY: Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk, is sent on election duty in the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh, which is under the control of the naxals. And though I found it to be very offensive as a black man, I thought that it was much more abusive to overweight people and to people who don't fit a certain ideal of beauty. But Norbit is a film that is legitimized by the presence of a true star with choices. The people in that film didn't have a lot of choices as far as their film careers go, so they did that piece of crap. Soul Plane was nothing more than a 90 minute skit based on stereotypes. I found this film to be every bit as offensive as Soul Plane, and likely more damaging. (And I tell you, I feel terrible for that girl who played Young Rasputia.). I'd argue with her, but I was never convinced of my own stance. She has noticed his choices of leading women, and even his tendency to make darker skinned women the "bad guy" in his films while lighter skinned women are the desirable women of the main character's dreams. My sister has pointed out to me on a number of occasions that Eddie Murphy has a dark skin complexion complex. But I figured Eddie Murphy for much more class than this. And Katt Williams has made his whole career as a comedian by playing on a racial stereotype and performing self hating and degrading comedy. ![]() I would expect this type of buffoonery from the Wayans brothers (it was no shock that Marlon was a character in this). There's not much else to be said about the film. ![]() Any points that Eddie Murphy might have gained from his performance in Dreamgirls was surely negated, and even trumped by this vile concoction of distasteful images and vulgarly offensive "comedy" that is Norbit. ![]()
